Chapter 16: Yan Han's Speech
Zhen Nuan screamed "Ah!" a few times, and the noisy crowd suddenly fell silent, like thousands of quacking ducks suddenly disappearing from a pond.
Everyone's eyes turned to Yan Han as they saw her pale face and screaming that someone had killed a policeman, as if she had been in a state of extreme shock.
The brother-in-law held a short but sharp knife in his hand, while Yan Han exaggeratedly took two steps back, tightly gripping his wrist, blood seeping from between his fingers and dripping onto the ground.
The brother-in-law was stunned. He just wanted to break free of his restraints. It was clearly the policeman who ran into him on his own... right?
At this moment, he was also confused. Because everything had happened too fast for him!
His friends were stunned. Causing trouble was one thing, but stabbing a policeman was quite another.
Most of the people who came today were not close relatives of Jiang Xiao. It was fine if they made a scene, but no one wanted to get themselves involved and be labeled as an accomplice in assaulting a police officer.
The police arrived in an orderly fashion, and someone in the crowd shouted, "Someone killed a policeman! Run!"
Most of the people who had been diligently causing trouble ran away in an instant. The rest also stopped their commotion and fighting.
The two sides remained in a tense stalemate, while the police maintained order and composure among the onlookers.
Yan Han, clutching his bleeding wrist, smiled at the stunned man before him. "Shall we send a representative in to have a talk now?"
His face flushed red, and he was about to retort—
Jiang Xiao's brother hurriedly stepped forward, bowing repeatedly to Yan Han. "Sir, my brother-in-law acted impulsively, but not on purpose, and he absolutely did not want to kill you. Sir, please don't take it to heart."
Jiang Xiao's sister-in-law was still angry and came up to scold people, but several policewomen grabbed her shoulders and "gently" pulled her aside.
Yan Han took a deep breath. "Mr. Jiang, you say the police are being unreasonable, but what about your behavior of causing trouble and assaulting people? A dozen grown men bullying two girls, is that acceptable?"
The onlookers were buzzing with discussion, and the brother-in-law's face turned as red as a pig's liver. He had been louder than anyone else, but he couldn't reason with them.
"Mr. Jiang, and this... brother-in-law. I understand your grief over the loss of your loved ones. But that is not a reason for you to intimidate and threaten them."
Yan Han pointed to Zhen Nuan, Guan Xiaoyu, and other colleagues behind him.
"The two girls you just beat up were investigating the truth behind your sister's death. They worked in sub-zero temperatures, turning over the soil on the roof with their hands, squatting there for four or five hours at a time. When testing and analyzing physical evidence, one can stand in front of the lab bench for thirteen hours straight.
"There were other investigators, some working day and night comparing fingerprints and shoe prints, others traveling all over the city to conduct interviews. They did all this with unwavering passion and faith, and a strong sense of responsibility and mission.
"Of course, they don't need your understanding, because it's their job. Even if you scold or hit them, they will still do what they are supposed to do fairly and professionally next time.
"However, if you don't understand, please at least show respect."
He stood close to the crowd, and as they listened, they were deeply moved and began to discuss it amongst themselves.
As Zhen Nuan listened to his words, her nose inexplicably stung, as if something had struck her heart hard.
She inexplicably remembered what Professor Zheng had taught her: "Though the road is treacherous and difficult, I will still go!"
Turning her head, she saw that Guan Xiaoyu's eyes were also red.
After hearing this, Jiang Xiao's brother nodded repeatedly in agreement; his brother-in-law remained silent.
Yan Han said, "Mr. Jiang, we have informed you and your wife of the investigation process and results in writing. If you have any objections, you can apply for a review. We also welcome your call for social media supervision, but if you cause trouble again, we will detain you on charges of disturbing public order."
Those who had come to cause trouble realized they were in the wrong and wouldn't make a fuss, so they dispersed one by one.
Bystanders also switched sides and supported the police.
Although the brother-in-law was still angry, he was afraid because he had injured a policeman.
Jiang Xiao's sister-in-law wasn't finished and rushed over to yell at her, but her good-for-nothing husband had already apologized to Zhen Nuan.
"Girl, I'm sorry. Actually, I knew in my heart that Xiaoxiao said she would definitely win back Young Master Shen when she went out that day, and I guessed that she would cry, make a scene, and threaten suicide. But I thought it might work, and if it didn't, the Shen family would have to give her some more money to save face, so I let her go. It was my fault."
Upon hearing this, Sister-in-law Jiang angrily retorted, "What nonsense are you spouting, you damned man?"
Enraged, Brother Jiang retorted, "It's all because of your insatiable greed! You keep pressuring Xiaoxiao for money, and you're the one who taught her to cause trouble!"
The woman snapped, "You supported her through university, sacrificing your own education and even injuring your hand. She owes you a debt of gratitude. Let me tell you, Xiaoxiao didn't really commit suicide. It was that despicable couple from the Shen family who killed her. They have to pay compensation!"
The eldest brother of the Jiang family couldn't be reasoned with, so he simply turned around and left.
Sister-in-law Jiang was alone and powerless. Her husband didn't stand by her side, and even passersby were pointing fingers and gossiping. She left after saying she wouldn't give up.
Yan Han turned around and saw that Zhen Nuan's hair was in a mess, her clothes were wrinkled, and her moist, dark eyes were blank and panicked for a long time.
Seeing that she was still in shock, Yan Han suddenly said, "You should study hard in the future."
Puzzled by his abrupt shifts in thought, she nodded blankly. "Oh."
"Learn more swear words."
"Ah?"
He smiled and teased, "What grade are you in?"
"'Bad guy?' Hmm?" His beautiful almond-shaped eyes curved into a smile. "Is that the only word you can think of?"
It took Zhen Nuan a few seconds to realize that she had indeed shouted "Bad guy attacking police with a knife!" She was immediately embarrassed and protested that even "bad guys" was better than nothing.
She lowered her head and whispered like a mosquito: "I've never sworn at anyone."
"It's okay." He was generous and open-minded. "You'll start cursing me gradually."
"..." She was embarrassed, but his antics had at least made her forget her initial shock.
She was a mess from head to toe, but she was still clutching the folder tightly in her arms, which was stained with blood.
"Let me see your hand."
She was stunned for a moment, then obediently stretched out her hand, which was covered in red and white patches, with cuts and bloodstains on her knuckles.
Yan Han frowned slightly, his eyes filled with displeasure. "If I were you, I would have thrown the folder away."
She stared wide-eyed in astonishment. "How could that be?"
"..." He stared at her for half a second. This girl really didn't know what a joke was.
He smiled slightly, then his expression gradually faded.
"You need to be careful to protect yourself in the future. If you hurt your hand, your career will be ruined. Those people won't care about the injury they cause you. Even if they hurt your hand, they won't think it's that serious and won't understand that it will destroy you."
Zhen Nuan was speechless; in an instant, a belated sense of grievance welled up in her heart.
"...Captain..." She had barely opened her mouth when, for some reason, large tears began to fall.
Yan Han was clearly taken aback.
She was startled by her own tears the moment they fell, and hurriedly turned her head away, regretting her own weakness.
She didn't realize it at the time, but now she was trembling with fear.
Yan Han chuckled. "Tears are free, aren't they?"
She couldn't help but chuckle again, taking the opportunity to wipe away her tears and change the subject. "What about you? Why don't you take care of your hands?"
"He won't die," he said. "If those people cause a ruckus, it will be a lot of trouble."
He doesn't seem to care much about himself.
She walked slowly beside him, thought for a moment, and finally spoke softly. "Captain."
"Hmm?" he asked casually.
"Just now... I actually saw it all." She hesitated.
"What did you see?" he asked casually.
"It wasn't that brother-in-law who hurt you, you ran into him yourself." She said it in a very formal and measured way.
"Then why are you cooperating with me?" It was somewhat amusing.
"I have no choice, but..." she stammered.
"But?"
"Captain, it's not right for you to betray people like this. After all... you're a police officer."
"Bite me!"
"..."
She gazed blankly at the sky. She should have known that this captain was a scoundrel who didn't play by the rules.
She muttered to herself, "I didn't say anything, but it just felt a little strange."
He stopped and glanced at her sideways.
Her back stiffened. Had she really talked too much?
After a long pause, he raised the corners of his lips. "How about I make sure you stay after your internship, and you don't tell anyone this 'earth-shattering secret'?"
That tone of voice, like teasing a child...
"..."
As Yan Han entered the building, medical staff rushed over to bandage his wound.
"It's not deep," Yan Han said casually, picking up a piece of gauze and wrapping it around himself, then gesturing to the medical staff, "Take care of her."
As the medical staff applied medicine and bandaged Zhen Nuan, they grumbled, "These people seem pitiful on the surface, but they're actually hateful. I have a friend who's a doctor; he was worried about the patient's health and didn't prescribe Demerol, and as a result, he got his tendons severed. He paid tens of thousands of yuan to settle the matter, but he'll never be able to hold a scalpel again. I think some professions are just getting more and more pathetic the longer you do them."
Zhen Nuan naturally knew that she was included in this group, but when she remembered what Yan Han had said at the police station entrance, her previously aggrieved and confused heart became firm.
She said softly, "It's okay, just stay true to yourself."
I gained something again today.
Being able to persevere and not feel lost is such a fulfilling and happy feeling.
Yan Han turned around upon hearing this. Her black hair was disheveled, but her smile was clean and innocent, and her amber eyes held a simple and pure joy and secret delight.
Amber eyes... He quietly withdrew his gaze.
