Chapter 12: The Prayer That Backfired

Shunyin was led back to the city on horseback. Moreover, from the city gates all the way to the military governor's mansion, Mu Changzhou personally held her reins, the two horses always close together. Even with her head bowed behind the veil, she could feel countless gazes upon her along the way… The afternoon sun shone warmly from outside the door to the corner of the table. Shunyin gripped her pen and closed the notebook in her hand. Having just finished writing a few lines describing the scene outside the south gate, she couldn't help but recall that day, a lingering unease in her heart. Suddenly, Shengyu entered from outside, holding a card in both hands and presenting it to her, announcing loudly: "Madam, an invitation has arrived." Shunyin snapped out of her reverie and took it, asking, "Who sent it?" Shengyu replied, "It's Governor Lu, inviting Madam to the Buddha's Birthday celebration." Shunyin unfolded it and examined it...

Chapter 92: Meng Ruji’s Wedding

Light from the ground rose to confront the dark, heavy malevolent energy in the sky.

Meng Ruji grasped Mu Sui’s hand and stepped forward, shoulder to shoulder, facing Mo Yi above.

“Qianshan Jun.”

Mo Yi’s voice was unchanged, yet Meng Ruji no longer felt the crushing pressure. The Thousand Mountains Formation’s light curved into a barrier, gentle and warm, as if the earth itself sheltered them.

“Stripped of your divine status, you gained human weakness,” Mo Yi said coldly. “I was wrong. You became human, and humans are all the same.”

Black lightning flickered among the clouds. Bolts struck down, shattering formation cores, yet each light reformed, pointing skyward again.

“Meng Ruji,” Mu Sui murmured, eyes fixed on Mo Yi. “Perhaps I truly am a lost wanderer. Even now, I cannot judge if this is right or wrong, if I’ll regret this moment…”

Meng Ruji interlaced her fingers with his. “She’s not wrong—humans are all the same. We cannot foresee the future. Choices may be right or wrong, but what harm is there in being wrong? Humans must die, all things end. We are mayflies between heaven and earth. What is there to fear? Journeying through this transient world, without shame, without regret—this is already the best humans can achieve.”

Mu Sui smiled faintly. “Ruji… this life is indeed a temporary dwelling, knowing death yet seeking life…”

His grip tightened. His eyes cleared, bright as the sky after rain.

Mo Yi’s thunder clashed with Mu Sui’s Thousand Mountains Formation. Black dragons of malevolence and silver dragons of light battled across heaven and earth.

“Very well,” Mo Yi’s voice echoed. “Our battle fulfills my wish.”

Meng Ruji raised her hand, sending a fragile barrier toward Mo Yi. It shattered instantly, malevolent energy striking back—until Qing Rao’s light deflected it.

“Master, I’ll protect you.”

Meng Ruji smiled. “Mu Sui, entangle her. Force her range to the minimum. I’ll trap her.”

He frowned. “Without the Inner Core, you can’t contain her.”

“We have to try.”

Together they fought. Meng Ruji’s fragments of light formed arcs, harder than before. From Hengxu Mountain, Shang Lan’s beam joined. Then from Lu Mountain, then others—countless lights from all directions, fragments connecting into a hemisphere.

It was the will of all beings, refusing to give up.

Meng Ruji’s eyes reddened. Mu Sui’s hands bled as he controlled the formation.

Victory or defeat, life or death, would be decided here.

Mo Yi shattered fragments, but new ones rose. Ants building a wall, stone by stone. The weakness she despised became strength.

She touched her cheek—tears.

The barrier neared completion. Mo Yi gathered all malevolent energy, striking the final gap. But a seven‑colored radiance sealed it.

From that fragment fell Mo Li.

He embraced her. “Mo Yi… stop crying. I’ve come to accompany you.”

She trembled, holding him. His blood stained her palm. He had rushed from the Realm of No Return, using his life to become that fragment.

“You see… I didn’t die alone. Everyone is watching—they’re attending my funeral…”

Tears fell like rain.

He whispered, “Stopped you…” and pierced her throat.

Her divine body yielded. Malevolent energy dispersed.

Mo Li died smiling in her arms. Mo Yi dissolved with him under heavenly light.

The Human God vanished. Malevolent energy scattered.

Meng Ruji lowered her hand. The barrier dissipated. Mu Sui retrieved the Inner Core, extinguishing the beacon fires.

Bright sunlight broke through.

“Mo Li once said this Inner Core was condensed by Mo Yi, hoping it could stop her. We did half, he did the other half.” Meng Ruji laughed softly. “The old fellow’s luck wasn’t too bad.”

Wind answered.

She steadied herself, then turned to Mu Sui.

“Qianshan Jun. After Mo Li’s seventh day, we’ll hold the wedding feast.”

Mu Sui was stunned.

“You didn’t give me one in Zhuliu City. Now, on my territory, I’ll arrange it. Afterward, we’ll investigate the case. Those who conspired against the gods—we’ll settle accounts. I’ll accompany you for revenge. But grievances have their source, debts their master. Don’t drag innocents into harm.”

She patted his shoulder. “Then we’ll be husband and wife—a Demon Lord at her peak and a Dark God from the abyss.”

Mu Sui chuckled.

Meng Ruji arched a brow. “What? Objections to this marriage?”

He handed her the Inner Core.

“The Thousand Mountains Formation is mine, the Creation Power is yours. Between husband and wife, assets are split equally. Do you object?”

She was stunned, then took it. “What a loss. Your Zhuliu City isn’t even in the mortal realm, while my Hengxu Mountain exists. In the future, you’ll have to earn big money.”

“Working won’t earn big money.”

“I don’t care. I’ll help you get revenge, you help me make money. Mutual benefit—that’s how we’ll last, husband.”

Qing Rao, trembling, asked softly: “Will Master’s husband also take charge of Hengxu Mountain?”

Meng Ruji patted her. “In seven days, we’ll hold the wedding feast and announce it to the world.”

Mu Sui glanced at Qing Rao. She nodded vigorously. “We’ll do it! A grand celebration!”

On the eighth day after the Human God’s fall, Hengxu Mountain’s Demon Lord truly ascended to her position. On that same day, she married a mysterious man—said to be a deity from the abyss, who rarely left Hengxu Mountain but always watched over the mortal realm.
