Chapter 8: The Chess Game

The task Qiao Mingxuan had assigned to the three newcomers this time was indeed more than just a test of their abilities—it was a genuine project Qiao Mingxuan was actively working on and promoting, something with real stakes and real consequences.

And it wasn't actually about finding investors for a medical examination institution, despite what the assignment parameters might have suggested.

This project had actually been initiated from the opposite direction entirely: an investor had approached Qiao Mingxuan directly, hoping he could help locate an institution providing medical examination services worth investing in. The investor wanted to use this strategic investment to expand into the health services industry, establishing a foothold in a sector he believed had enormous growth potential.

Therefore, when Qiao Mingxuan said Zhong Qing had guessed wrong, he was technically correct. Therefore, when Shi Tao said Zhong Qing's guess had actually been quite accurate, he was also correct. The truth existed in the space between their two assessments.

"Zhong Qing is genuinely smart—remarkably so for someone at her level." Shi Tao didn't hold back his praise, the words flowing with the enthusiasm of someone who had discovered unexpected talent. "She has methodology and she actively uses her brain rather than just following instructions. She was able to intuit almost everything we were planning to do next, which is impressive for a newcomer. She's definitely strong candidate material for project management roles. Our task assignment was essentially step one in a process; the other two completed it to roughly equal step one, producing exactly what was asked for. But she went straight to step two, anticipating the next phase without being told."

Qiao Mingxuan returned his coffee cup to the table with deliberate precision, removed his glasses with one hand, and looked at Shi Tao with a glint of playful challenge in his eyes. "When did you become so skilled at praising people using mathematical metaphors? One, two, seventy-eighths, almost certainly... Are you trying to subtly criticize me for being too clever and making a strategic mistake? Implying that my assessment of her was wrong?"

Shi Tao immediately waved both hands in emphatic denial, his expression shifting to something closer to alarm. "No, no, how could I possibly dare to be so presumptuous!" Though actually, there was perhaps a hint of that buried in his praise.

But he also understood Qiao Mingxuan's true intention beneath the criticism delivered during the meeting.

"I know you said that deliberately during the presentation. You wanted to prevent Zhong Qing from becoming overconfident and arrogant right at the start of her career here, and to keep her from developing that particularly clever, overly analytical mindset that can easily lead to stubbornness and critical errors in judgment." Shi Tao spoke with the confidence of someone who had worked alongside Qiao Mingxuan long enough to read between the lines.

Qiao Mingxuan's eyebrows lifted almost imperceptibly—a movement so subtle it barely registered as expression at all. He had his reasons for everything he did, certainly. But he had never actually expected anyone to see through his deliberate misdirection so clearly. Even when misunderstood by others, he rarely bothered to care. Being misunderstood was, after all, everyone's inevitable fate. Why waste energy fighting against it?

Shi Tao observed Qiao Mingxuan carefully, reading his body language and the minute shifts in his expression with practiced attention. He figured his boss was in a relatively good mood today—the chess game with Qin Cangyan always put him in better spirits—so he decided he could afford to continue being bold and push his luck a bit further. "But Mr. Qiao, you actually feel the same way the rest of us do—that Zhong Qing is indeed quite exceptional, isn't that right?"

Qiao Mingxuan's left eye twitched slightly at the presumptuous question. The small mole positioned at the corner of his eye also shifted almost imperceptibly with the movement, but that subtle animation brought an unexpected quality of liveliness to his otherwise controlled features. It revealed that beneath his habitually serious and somewhat imposing professional aura, he too possessed normal human emotions and desires rather than being the impassive machine he sometimes appeared to be.

However, when he actually spoke, his voice remained deliberately flat and his tone studied in its indifference. "Is your behavior here any different from what Zhong Qing did in the conference room just now—trying to be too clever by half? If you keep attempting to outsmart me with these transparent maneuvers, I'll send you to the frontier offices to handle the most difficult, thankless projects we have."

Shi Tao quickly made an exaggerated zipping motion across his mouth, pantomiming sealing it shut.

He paused halfway through the performance, suddenly realizing the discussion wasn't actually over yet and he had one more crucial question. He reversed the imaginary zipping motion, dramatically unzipping his mouth, and asked with as much innocent curiosity as he could muster, "Mr. Qiao, if I may be so bold as to ask one final question before I leave: have you already decided which of the three new recruits will join the team for this project?"

Qiao Mingxuan responded with a look that seemed to communicate his desire to banish Shi Tao not just from his office but possibly from the entire building.

Shi Tao took the hint and quickly fled the office, his exit far less dignified than his entrance. As he walked back to his own workspace, he found himself thinking that Qiao Mingxuan actually seemed to actively dislike Zhong Qing based on how he'd spoken about her. So logically, the candidate selected to join the project must be one of the other two newcomers. That would make the most sense.

After the research presentation meeting concluded, Zhong Qing had felt with sinking certainty that it was extremely unlikely she would secure a position on Qiao Mingxuan's project this time around.

But she refused to let herself become discouraged by this setback. Her difficult childhood—years of navigating poverty and instability—had forged a particular quality in her character that proved invaluable: she wouldn't give up easily on goals she'd set for herself. But even when all her considerable efforts were exhausted and she still didn't obtain the expected result, even when doors slammed shut despite her best work, she would never allow herself to wallow in discouragement or self-pity. If something didn't work out this time, there would inevitably be another opportunity. Another project. Another chance.

People could always maintain hope and establish new goals as long as they possessed this fundamental resilience. And as long as they held onto that quality, they still had a viable future ahead of them.

Zhong Qing made a conscious decision to turn the page mentally and continue working hard for the next chapter of her professional life. She couldn't secure a position on Qiao Mingxuan's current project, but that didn't mean she couldn't plan strategically and work diligently to position herself for his next one.

Just as Zhong Qing had fully adjusted her mindset and committed herself to taking this longer-term approach, exactly two days after the meeting, she suddenly received an unexpected notification from Shi Tao: Starting today, President Qiao wants you to begin learning from his current project. You'll be joining the team.

Zhong Qing felt momentarily stunned, her mind temporarily unable to process the reversal. She found herself wondering whether that man was simply extraordinarily adept at manipulating other people's thoughts and emotions—at engineering these dramatic swings between despair and hope. Just when she had completely convinced herself that all hope was lost, a miraculous turnaround materialized out of nowhere. This unexpected twist, this sudden surprise, made it almost too easy to feel grateful to him, to experience that rush of thankfulness toward someone who held power over her professional fate.

That same afternoon, Qiao Mingxuan summoned Zhong Qing to his office for a private conversation. He wasn't particularly friendly or warm with her during this meeting, maintaining instead a businesslike, stern demeanor as he methodically explained the rules and expectations: Since you're now on his project team, you must demonstrate complete dedication. You should focus on learning and observing more while offering fewer unsolicited opinions. And especially—this part he emphasized with particular force—don't try to be clever or show off your analytical abilities prematurely.

Zhong Qing responded with sincere promises that she would remain humble, maintain a strong work ethic, and apply herself diligently to every task. She assured him that she would not give President Qiao any reason to regret choosing her for this project opportunity.

Being flexible and adaptable in response to different authority figures and varying circumstances—that was something she had excelled at since childhood, a survival skill honed through years of necessity.

To better achieve her ultimate goals within this company, she made a calculated decision to cater strategically to Qiao Mingxuan's preferences and work style. She would observe carefully what pleased him and what irritated him, then adjust her behavior accordingly.

After leaving Qiao Mingxuan's imposing office, Shi Tao—acting as if he were deliberately taking over the relay of information—called Zhong Qing to his own much smaller workspace. He explained the actual project details to her, and the explanation left Zhong Qing feeling somewhat dumbfounded by the irony.

The project was indeed very close to what she had deduced using the "cleverness" that Qiao Mingxuan had criticized so publicly. She had guessed the work involved finding investors for medical examination institutions. The actual project was about matching investors with a suitable medical examination institution as an investment target. The direction was reversed, but the components were identical.

Looking at the situation from this perspective, she couldn't help feeling that Qiao Mingxuan's harsh criticism during the meeting had been somewhat excessive, carrying an edge that seemed to contain some element of personal emotion rather than pure professional assessment.

Yet if he particularly disliked her on a personal level, why had he chosen her—specifically her, before the other two—to be the first participant in his project? The contradiction didn't make logical sense.

Zhong Qing couldn't figure this complicated man out, couldn't predict his thinking or motivations. So, for the sake of maintaining her own strategic advantage, she decided to continue being exactly the kind of woman he couldn't easily see through or categorize. If he was going to be unpredictable, she would match that unpredictability with her own carefully maintained opacity.

After listening to Shi Tao's comprehensive explanation, Zhong Qing finally understood the full scope and specific details of the project she'd been brought onto.

There existed a well-funded investment institution called Cangshi Fund. Its owner and primary decision-maker, Qin Cangyan, had dealt with Qiao Mingxuan numerous times over the years, and he had consistently been extremely satisfied with Qiao Mingxuan's performance and results. Investment projects introduced by Qiao Mingxuan had yielded reliably high returns, making it almost impossible for Qin Cangyan to maintain any pretense of indifference—the track record spoke for itself.

Now, Qin Cangyan had recently established a wholly-owned subsidiary called Cangshi Medical under the umbrella of his larger Cangshi Fund. The subsidiary had been created with the specific intention of investing strategically in the medical services sector. Qin Cangyan had studied market trends carefully and felt genuinely optimistic about this industry's future growth potential. He wanted to secure a strong foothold as quickly as possible through smart investments, with the ambitious goal of making Cangshi Medical a dominant giant in the field within five to ten years.

Investing in a health checkup institution represented just one component of Qin Cangyan's current comprehensive investment plan. If this initial investment proceeded smoothly and demonstrated the anticipated returns, he planned to accelerate his investment activities significantly—moving into adjacent areas such as medical aesthetics, specialized dentistry, and traditional Chinese medicine wellness centers. He even harbored plans to eventually expand into emerging fields like smart community healthcare systems and elderly care projects designed to serve China's rapidly aging population.

Therefore, establishing a successful collaborative relationship with Qin Cangyan now meant potentially securing a continuous series of lucrative projects extending far into the future. This wasn't just one opportunity—it was potentially the foundation for years of profitable work.

Shi Tao also briefed Zhong Qing thoroughly on the current project's progress and status, filling in context she needed to understand her role.

It turned out that sending the three newcomers to investigate Zhiqiang Health Checkup specifically hadn't been a random selection or arbitrary choice designed purely as a training exercise. This particular health checkup institution had been explicitly designated by Cangshi Fund as their preferred target.

"Zhiqiang Health Checkup was personally recommended by General Manager Qin Cangyan himself," Shi Tao explained to Zhong Qing, providing crucial background.

Zhong Qing carefully, tentatively reiterated the thoughts she'd developed during her research, speaking with appropriate caution. "But I still feel that Kangping Health Checkup appears to be a more suitable candidate as an investment target for multiple strategic reasons..."

"Actually, you're far from the only person with this particular idea." Shi Tao smiled with something that looked like knowing amusement. "But the relationships and politics involved are considerably more complicated than they appear on the surface. Zhiqiang Medical Examination was initially pushed to another senior manager within Cangshi by a different financial advisory firm—a competitor of ours. That manager then passed the Zhiqiang Medical Examination proposal upward to Qin Cangyan for his consideration. The complicating factor is that Qin Cangyan has never previously worked with the financial advisory firm that originally recommended Zhiqiang. After our CEO Qiao heard about this situation through his network, he proactively approached CEO Qin with an offer, saying he could help verify whether Zhiqiang Medical Examination truly represented the optimal solution or whether alternatives might prove superior."

Hearing this additional context, Zhong Qing immediately blurted out her analysis without thinking to filter it first. "In that case, Zhiqiang Medical Examination almost certainly cannot be the optimal solution from Qiao Mingxuan's perspective."

Shi Tao paused, visibly taken aback by the speed and certainty of her conclusion. "Why do you say that with such confidence?"

Zhong Qing offered her characteristically sharp analysis while maintaining an expression of innocent curiosity, as though she were merely asking questions rather than making accusations. "Because this entire project was actively sought out by President Qiao from President Qin—he initiated the engagement rather than being invited. If Zhiqiang Medical Examination genuinely is the optimal solution, it means the competing FA agency can continue moving forward with the deal unimpeded. Furthermore, all of Cangshi's subsequent investments throughout the medical system would likely remain tied to that same FA agency, meaning they would have successfully secured ongoing access to substantial financial advisory fees extending well into the future. From President Qiao's business perspective, recommending Zhiqiang would essentially mean handing over valuable performance targets and future revenue to a competing financial advisory agency. That makes no strategic sense whatsoever."

Therefore, she reasoned internally, Qiao Mingxuan had probably already concluded independently that Zhiqiang Medical Examination wasn't the optimal investment target. Yet despite holding this belief, he had still criticized her so harshly during the meeting for reaching essentially the same conclusion.

Just how much did this man actually dislike her? The intensity of his public criticism seemed disproportionate to any professional failing she could identify.

This wasn't a positive sign for her long-term goals, as it suggested that getting genuinely closer to him—building the kind of trust and rapport that would advance her career—would prove extremely difficult.

After listening to Zhong Qing's rapid analysis, Shi Tao smiled with visible approval and warmth. "I told you that you're exceptionally well-suited for this line of work. You think through problems quickly and comprehensively, connecting dots that others miss. However—" His expression shifted slightly, becoming more serious. "President Qiao genuinely isn't the kind of calculating person you're describing. He doesn't simply declare a target unsuitable regardless of its actual merits, purely to secure future collaboration opportunities and revenue streams. He's fundamentally a pragmatic person who values accuracy over politics."

He paused deliberately, then continued with a slight warning edge to his voice. "I'll send all the project-related materials to your email address shortly. Study them as thoroughly as possible as soon as you can. President Qiao might take us to visit Cangshi Fund at any moment—potentially with very little notice. Don't be completely clueless about the project details when we arrive. Otherwise, President Qiao might genuinely kill you. And I'm not speaking metaphorically."

Zhong Qing had heard repeatedly since joining the company that Qiao Mingxuan was a seemingly gentle but actually ruthless figure in professional contexts. Since beginning work here, she had experienced firsthand that this reputation was indeed well-deserved rather than exaggerated.

She didn't dare delay or procrastinate. She began studying the comprehensive materials immediately after receiving Shi Tao's email, working late into the night—

Zhong Qing hadn't expected that Shi Tao's casual reference to "anytime" would manifest quite so quickly and literally.

She had just finished studying all the project materials the previous night, working until nearly 2 AM to absorb everything. The next morning, as soon as she arrived at the company and was still settling into her desk, Shi Tao appeared at her workspace with urgent news. "Get ready immediately. We're going to Cangshi Fund with President Qiao and me in about twenty minutes."

Cangshi Fund operated out of its own dedicated office building—a structure called Cangshi Building that was located in the northern financial district of the city. Zhong Qing's previous internship at a securities firm had been positioned right next to Cangshi Building, so she wasn't entirely unfamiliar with the area or its particular atmosphere of concentrated wealth.

However, upon actually entering the Cangshi Building's interior for the first time, she still found herself somewhat overwhelmed by the aggressive grandeur of its design aesthetic.

A beautiful secretary was already waiting in the expansive lobby when they arrived, smoothly and efficiently ushering them toward the elevators and then up to Qin Cangyan's personal office.

Upon stepping through the office doors, Zhong Qing almost thought she had accidentally entered an airport terminal rather than a private workspace. The room was absurdly large and flooded with natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows. The space was so vast that she imagined voices might actually echo if someone spoke too loudly.

Qin Cangyan appeared to be approximately fifty years old, with graying temples that lent him distinguished gravitas and two slightly deep nasolabial folds etched into his face—lines that gave him an air of accumulated authority built over decades.

He sat at a square table positioned near the windows. A chessboard rested on its surface, pieces already arranged for play.

The secretary led Qiao Mingxuan to sit in the chair opposite Qin Cangyan, and the two men began playing chess with perfect unspoken synchronization. Neither one mentioned the project or business matters first—apparently this ritual took precedence.

Shi Tao guided Zhong Qing to sit down on a luxurious sofa positioned several meters away from the chess table, and told her in a low voice, "They always play at least one game of chess first whenever they meet for any reason. Let's sit down and wait patiently. Just tell me what you'd like to drink—don't be overly formal or polite about it."

Zhong Qing watched the chessboard intently, her expression carefully arranged to appear genuinely curious rather than calculating, and whispered to Shi Tao, "Manager Shi, who do you think will ultimately win this game?"

Shi Tao leaned closer and whispered back, first addressing the form of address. "We're all part of the same team now, just call me Brother Shi. Don't use the formal 'you' or honorifics constantly, or outsiders will think we're not actually close." Then he continued even more quietly, "In this particular game, President Qiao can afford neither to win nor to lose outright. If he wins decisively, President Qin will feel resentful and insist on playing multiple additional games to recover his pride. If he loses too obviously, President Qin will think his opponent is incompetent and not worth his time. The only acceptable outcome is a draw that suggests evenly matched skills."

Zhong Qing's eyes widened with genuine surprise. "He has to deliberately engineer a draw? That's incredibly difficult."

Shi Tao blinked and nodded confirmation, clearly amused by her reaction.

Zhong Qing clicked her tongue and shook her head in something close to disbelief.

Why did it feel exactly like the delicate art of appeasing an emperor in ancient times? The same careful balance, the same need to manage pride and perception rather than simply playing to win.

She asked Shi Tao quietly if she could stand closer to watch the game more carefully, and Shi Tao nodded permission.

She approached on tiptoe, moving silently to avoid disrupting the players' concentration.

The battle unfolding on the chessboard grew increasingly fierce and complex as it progressed, but fortunately Qiao Mingxuan appeared exceptionally well-prepared for this particular challenge. After several intense back-and-forth exchanges where neither player gained decisive advantage, the game finally concluded in a draw that looked natural rather than forced.

Qin Cangyan stared at the final board position for an extended moment, rubbing his hands together with theatrical regret. "If I hadn't moved my knight in that direction just now, I would have achieved victory by this point. Such a small mistake."

Zhong Qing had spent considerable time playing chess with Yi Qiang during their relationship, and Yi Qiang had been something of a chess master with genuine skill. Drawing on that experience, she could see with absolute clarity that Qiao Mingxuan had hidden a devastating counter-move within every single step he'd taken. If Qin Cangyan hadn't moved his knight exactly when and where he did, Qiao Mingxuan's subsequent positioning of his rook would have meant Qin Cangyan's immediate and unavoidable defeat. The knight move hadn't been a mistake—it had been Qin Cangyan's only path to survival, and Qiao Mingxuan had subtly guided him toward making it.

Qiao Mingxuan responded to Qin Cangyan's self-criticism with appropriate modesty, saying smoothly, "Then I'm exceptionally lucky to have survived under President Qin's formidable strategic pressure." Even as he spoke, his gaze shifted to where Zhong Qing stood watching.

Her attention was fixed with laser focus on his rook's position on the chessboard—the piece that would have delivered checkmate if Qin Cangyan had made any other move.

As if sensing that she was being observed, she turned her head and found herself meeting Qiao Mingxuan's direct gaze.

Then, with perfect timing, she gave him her signature silly, innocent smile—the one that made her look simple and harmless.

Qiao Mingxuan raised one eyebrow fractionally, the gesture barely perceptible.

In that instant, he realized with crystalline clarity that beneath her deliberately silly smile, she had absolutely discovered his hidden winning sequence. She'd seen through the careful manipulation, understood exactly how the draw had been engineered.

She could even see through something that subtle? This woman was getting more and more interesting with each passing interaction.

Qin Cangyan rose from the chess table and led Qiao Mingxuan toward the formal reception area, inviting him to sit on the sofa positioned opposite his own preferred seat.

Zhong Qing followed at an appropriate distance and sat on an adjacent sofa alongside Shi Tao, positioning herself where she could observe without appearing to intrude.

The satisfying draw had put Qin Cangyan in a noticeably good mood, and he settled in to discuss the actual project with Qiao Mingxuan with visible patience.

"I read the detailed email you sent me yesterday, but your recommendation that I should not invest in Zhiqiang Medical Examination Center raises an obvious question in my mind." Qin Cangyan's smile carried layers of meaning as he posed his challenge. "Is it that Zhiqiang Medical Examination Center genuinely shouldn't be invested in based on objective merits, or are you primarily afraid that if I do invest in Zhiqiang Medical Examination Center, all the subsequent operational work and advisory fees will fall into the hands of other financial advisors and have nothing whatsoever to do with you and your firm?"

The question was pointed and direct, cutting straight to potential ulterior motives.

Zhong Qing observed this exchange silently from her position on the side.

She felt a small shock of recognition—this big shot could be remarkably sharp and brutally straightforward in his business discussions, dispensing entirely with polite deflection.

When someone with Qin Cangyan's wealth and power directly pointed out the uncomfortable crux of the matter with such naked honesty, Qiao Mingxuan remained completely unfazed. He displayed his characteristic composure without the slightest crack in his professional demeanor. His objectively good looks greatly enhanced his overall appearance in moments like these, making him appear simultaneously calm and refined. Especially when he smiled—that particular expression almost perfectly embodied the phrase "pleasing to the eye," combining warmth with intelligence in ways that disarmed suspicion.

Qiao Mingxuan smiled now and elegantly countered by posing his own question rather than defending himself directly. "President Qin, may I ask you something first before I address your concern? Why is Zhiqiang Medical Examination your strongly preferred investment target in the first place?"

Qin Cangyan reached for the tea his attentive secretary had prepared and positioned within easy reach, then gestured for Qiao Mingxuan to join him in drinking. However—and Zhong Qing noted this detail with sharp attention—he didn't extend the invitation to include Shi Tao and herself.

At that moment, observing this small but significant exclusion, Zhong Qing saw an invisible pyramid of power and status materializing before her eyes. Those positioned at the apex wouldn't casually invite those situated at the bottom to share in simple privileges like drinking tea together. The hierarchy was absolute.

People expended tremendous energy climbing these pyramids, sometimes perhaps motivated by nothing more than the desire to achieve the prestige associated with being offered a cup of tea as an equal.

Qin Cangyan took a deliberate sip of his tea, and his expression immediately shifted to a frown of dissatisfaction. He gestured sharply to his secretary. "This season's tea doesn't taste acceptable. Replace the entire supply later with something better."

The secretary responded quickly and rose to fetch fresh tea immediately, but Qin Cangyan waved her away with visible irritation. "Let's leave it as it is for now. Don't delay our important business discussion. Next time, taste the tea yourself thoroughly before serving it to guests. Don't just bring everything out without quality control."

This brief exchange perfectly illustrated his fundamentally unapproachable nature and exacting standards. Zhong Qing found herself thinking that Qiao Mingxuan's ability to frequently deal with someone possessing this particular temperament—to not only tolerate it but apparently thrive in these interactions—meant he must possess considerable interpersonal skill alongside his analytical abilities.

Qin Cangyan set down his teacup with finality, smiled as though the tea incident had never occurred, and returned smoothly to the main topic at hand. He answered Qiao Mingxuan's earlier question with apparent candor. "Mingxuan, I won't hide anything from you since we've worked together successfully before. This Zhiqiang Medical Examination center was originally recommended by Qin Feiyang, a rising guy from Tonghui Capital who's been making quite a name for himself. He and his team conducted their own investigation, concluded the target was sound and worth investing in, and submitted their formal project proposal directly to me for consideration."

Zhong Qing's mind worked rapidly, processing this new information. This Qin Feiyang was probably the "other manager within Cangshi" that Shi Tao had mentioned earlier. The shared surname Qin strongly suggested he wasn't merely an ordinary manager hired from outside—there was almost certainly a family connection. She had previously reviewed all publicly available information about Qin Cangyan, Cangshi Fund, and Cangshi Medical during her research preparation, and had learned that Qin Cangyan and his wife had never had children. Therefore, this Qin Feiyang quite likely represented a close relative—perhaps Qin Cangyan's nephew or the son of a sibling.

"Did Mr. Qin Feiyang mention any specific positive aspects or compelling features of Zhiqiang Medical Examination that drove his recommendation?" Qiao Mingxuan asked Qin Cangyan with studied casualness.

Qin Cangyan replied, drawing on memory of conversations he'd had, "According to his team's investigation, this medical examination institution is relatively new to the market, which means it possesses genuine vitality and hasn't become bureaucratic. It's experiencing rapid growth, currently ranks quite highly within the industry despite its youth, and exists in a period of aggressive expansion. The company has a strong desire for financing to fuel continued growth, which theoretically should make the negotiated price relatively easier to reach agreement on compared to more established competitors." He paused, then smiled with visible amusement. "Wait, Mingxuan, why are you asking me all these questions about Zhiqiang Medical Examination's supposed merits? Isn't investigating this target and providing me with objective analysis precisely the task I assigned to you?"

Qiao Mingxuan returned the smile, reached up to adjust his glasses in a gesture that somehow conveyed both thoughtfulness and authority, and then spoke with complete seriousness that contrasted with his earlier lighter tone. "Mr. Qin, I want to be absolutely clear with you: I do not recommend that you invest in Zhiqiang Medical Examination. But I need you to understand that this professional recommendation has nothing whatsoever to do with my personal financial interests or competitive positioning." He paused for emphasis. "If Zhiqiang Medical Examination is truly worth your investment based on objective analysis, even if that means I cannot participate in your subsequent investment strategy and this potentially lucrative opportunity falls entirely into the hands of competing financial advisors, I will not—out of my professional ethics and commitment to providing you with honest counsel—" He made direct eye contact. "I will not attempt to force you away from a genuinely good investment. You know me well enough by now to know I have considerable professional pride. Our conclusion that Zhiqiang Health Checkup isn't the optimal investment target is based entirely on our thorough investigation, comprehensive research, and detailed financial calculations. Not on politics or fee protection."

Qin Cangyan nodded slowly upon hearing this explanation, his expression suggesting he was at least partially convinced. "That's accurate enough—you are indeed full of professional pride. I'll grant you that much." He paused, then added with renewed challenge, "However, I've also had my own people look into this situation independently, and recently several different channels and industry contacts have reported back to me that Zhiqiang Health Checkup represents a genuinely good project with strong fundamentals. Several other investors have already expressed serious interest. It might even develop into a competitive bidding situation where whoever wants to invest will have to fight for the opportunity." His gaze sharpened. "So why is such an apparently high-quality target being actively discouraged by you? I think you need to provide me with an extremely compelling reason—backed by hard evidence—to convince me to pass on this opportunity."

Zhong Qing felt her heart skip a beat at the challenge implicit in Qin Cangyan's words.

If everyone else in the industry was saying this was a good project, and only Qiao Mingxuan stood in opposition to that consensus, then conventional wisdom suggested the problem must lie with Qiao Mingxuan's analysis rather than with everyone else's. How could he possibly break through this deadlock when the weight of industry opinion stood against him?

"President Qin, I brought a new colleague with me today specifically to address this question." Qiao Mingxuan's voice remained perfectly calm as he shifted the conversation in an unexpected direction. "She's exceptionally diligent in her research methods. She personally visited the Zhiqiang Health Checkup physical locations in person and collected actual observational data rather than relying solely on publicly reported figures. I'll have her tell you directly about the real situation she discovered at Zhiqiang Health Checkup." He finished speaking and turned his gaze deliberately to where Zhong Qing sat.

Zhong Qing felt herself freeze completely, her mouth falling slightly open in shock.

Qiao Mingxuan raised one eyebrow at her through his glasses, the gesture carrying both challenge and expectation. "Zhong Qing, don't just sit there looking startled. Come here and tell President Qin about what you discovered at Zhiqiang Health Checkup, exactly the way you presented it in our internal meeting the other day."

Zhong Qing closed her mouth and swallowed hard. "Okay."

Thoughts on Chap 8:

It opens by clarifying the project's actual purpose—an investor seeking targets rather than a company seeking investors—which makes Zhong Qing's analysis both wrong in direction and remarkably prescient in content. Shi Tao's praise of Zhong Qing as someone who "went straight to step two" while others completed "step one" reveals how her tendency to overthink actually represents advanced strategic thinking. Qiao Mingxuan's selection of Zhong Qing for the project, despite his public criticism, demonstrates the complexity of his character: he values her abilities while deliberately tempering her confidence. The chess game with Qin Cangyan becomes a masterclass in corporate politics, where Qiao Mingxuan must engineer a draw to satisfy ego while Zhong Qing watches from the sidelines and sees through the manipulation completely. Her "silly smile" after recognizing his hidden winning move establishes an unspoken communication between them—she understands what he's doing, and he knows she understands.

The invisible pyramid Zhong Qing observes—where tea is offered to some but not others—captures her growing understanding of corporate hierarchy and her determination to climb it.
