Chapter 10: Autumnal Equinox

The bright moon of the Autumnal Equinox shone on the sparse sycamore trees, which shaded the glazed tiles. The autumn breeze blew gently, and occasionally a tung leaf fell, with a soft "crack" as it brushed against the white jade steps and landed lightly on the ground. Jinniang, carrying the food box, carefully ascended the steps. Although Xiao was the former Crown Princess, after the Crown Prince's death, she moved from the Eastern Palace to the Yunguang Palace. This was originally the residence of the empresses. Although Sun Jing held the power of regent, he did not claim the title of emperor, but only the title of Grand Commander. Because of her awkward position, everyone in the palace addressed her vaguely, calling her "Madam Xiao." Jinniang entered the palace with the food box, walked through the back hall, and continued to the small palace known as the "Xiyi Room" in the west side hall. She ...

Chapter 8: The Purple Path and Blue Gates

The spring breeze remains as before, deliberately following the willows along the embankment. It has shaped the moth's eyebrows turning almost yellow, during the clear and bright weather of Qingming.

Last year's purple path and blue gates, tonight's rain soul and cloud spirit. Wasting away a lifetime of haggardness, taking only a few dusks.

Because of the Lunar New Year holiday, the Shuangqiao Residence appeared even more tranquil than usual. Madam Mu Rong, having received a Western education since childhood and having spent many years abroad, viewed the traditional Lunar New Year very lightly. However, following long-standing customs, she would host a tea party at home after the New Year to entertain relatives and friends, so she supervised the servants with arrangements and cleaning. When Mu Rong Qing Yi returned home, he saw everyone bustling about busily, so he walked along the corridor to the door of the small drawing room on the west side. Wei Yi had already spotted him and called out cheerfully, "Third Brother." She turned back to make a face at Ren Susu, "Look, Third Brother has completely changed his nature. He used to be nowhere to be seen all day, but now he comes home before the sun sets."

Susu rose gracefully, smiling without speaking. Wei Yi also had to stand up reluctantly, saying, "Future Third Sister-in-law, you are like a mother, establishing rules. It's surprising that mother spent so many years abroad but has become traditional in this regard."

This remark made Susu's face redden, and she said softly, "Family rules are always necessary."

Wei Yi said cheerfully, "Hmm, family rules, that's wonderful, you finally admit this is your family?" Her lively nature had gradually made her familiar with Susu, and since their engagement, she had spent the most time with her as a companion, so she spoke and laughed without restraint. Seeing Susu's face turn red, she just beamed with joy.

Mu Rong Qing Yi lightly tapped Wei Yi's forehead with his hand, saying, "It's fine that you don't stand up when you see me, but don't get too lazy, or you'll stay put when you see Mother later."

Wei Yi stuck out her tongue at him, saying, "I'm going to practice the piano. I'll leave this place for you two to talk." She got up and left like a gust of wind.

Only then did Susu raise her head, smiling and asking, "Why did you come back so early today?"

Mu Rong Qing Yi saw her wearing an autumn-colored brocade qipao embroidered with silver thread in very fine patterns, which accentuated her bright eyes and white teeth, and he looked at her until she slowly lowered her head again. He smiled and asked, "What were you doing today?"

She said, "In the morning I studied English and French, in the afternoon Chinese classics and etiquette."

He gave a light laugh, saying, "Poor child."

Susu said, "It's because I'm too slow to learn, which makes mother so concerned."

Mu Rong Qing Yi held her hand, saying, "Those things are used in daily life, which is why mother has someone teach you. Actually, with time, you'll naturally learn." He added, "Today is the Lantern Festival, let's go see the lanterns."

On the night of the Lantern Festival, when the moon rises over the willow tips, people meet after dusk. Her heart sweetened slightly, but she shook her head gently, "I can't, I still have to learn dancing tonight."

He said, "It's just the foxtrot and waltz, I'll teach you later." As he spoke, he caught a faint fragrance from her neck, subtle and elusive yet lingering, and he couldn't help asking softly, "What perfume are you wearing?"

She answered, "None." After thinking for a moment, she said, "There's a sachet filled with cloves in the wardrobe, perhaps the clothes absorbed some of the scent."

But he said, "That sachet has always been in the wardrobe, why do I only smell it today?"

Too close, the warm breath stirred the loose strands of hair at her temples, and her face flushed, like the sunset's afterglow along the river, reddening to her ears, and she said softly, "How would I know?"

After dinner, taking advantage when no one was paying attention, he indeed went upstairs. Although Susu was somewhat concerned, seeing him dismiss the dance instructor with a few words, she had no choice but to go along. The two of them silently left the house, and he drove himself. Susu asked worriedly, "Just leaving like this, without bringing anyone?"

He smiled and said, "Why do we need to bring them? Nothing will happen, we'll just quietly go see the festivities and then come back."

The streets were indeed lively, with people viewing the lanterns and each other. Countless colorful lanterns hung along Huating Street, not just in shops on both sides, but even filling the trees. Under the lanterns, the crowd surged like a tide, truly a scene of "east wind releasing thousands of flower trees at night, blowing them down, stars falling like rain." Shops competed to set off fireworks at their doors, with clusters of light bursting in the sky east and west, creating a scene of "trees of fire and flowers of silver in a city without night." There were even more people in the flower market. Mu Rong Qing Yi led her by the hand, squeezing through the crowd, smiling and cautioning her, "Don't let go, if we get separated, I won't look for you."

Susu smiled, "If we get lost, can't I find my way back myself?"

Mu Rong Qing Yi gripped her hand tightly, saying, "Not allowed, you can only follow me."

The two of them walked through the flower market, and the crowd made them sweat from the heat. He was happy, "I never knew before that the New Year could be so lively."

Susu said, "Today is the last of the festivities, tomorrow the New Year celebrations will be over."

He then said, "Look at you, always saying such discouraging things."

Turning to see someone selling wontons, he asked her, "Are you hungry? I'm hungry." Hearing him speak this way, Susu knew he had noticed they had eaten Western food for dinner and was worried she might not be used to it and would be hungry, so he said this. Her heart was full, like a sail filled with wind, and she shook her head, "I'm not hungry."

But he had already sat down, saying, "One bowl of wontons." He smiled at her, "Take your time eating, I'll wait here. After the wedding, we probably won't be able to sneak out to eat even if we want to."

She said softly, "If Mother knew we were sitting at the roadside eating, she would be angry."

Mu Rong Qing Yi smiled, "Silly, how would she know? Take your time and eat."

The wontons were a bit salty, but she finished them one by one. He sat there waiting for her, surrounded by brilliant lights, and silver fireworks blooming one by one in the night sky, illuminating his face in alternating brightness and shadow. But her heart was bright and clear, like crystal radiating light. He only saw her look up and smile, a smile that dazzled and captivated, making even the fireworks in the sky behind her lose their luster.

The magnolia flowers in Shuangqiao Residence were the first to bloom with the first touch of spring. Countless white flowers had opened on the magnolia trees in front and behind the mansion, like cups of white jade filled with boundless spring light. After the magnolias, it seemed just a few days before the weeping silk begonias under the eaves were also in full bloom, blossoming so profusely that spring seemed as deep as the sea.

Susu sat in a wicker chair, lost in thought. Wei Yi came up from behind and patted her on the shoulder, "Third Sister-in-law!" startling her. Wei Yi asked with a grin, "Third Brother has only been gone for a day, and you already miss him?"

Susu turned her face away, muttering, "I was just thinking about how to say 'spring' in French."

Wei Yi gave an "Oh," but then mischievously recited, "Suddenly seeing the color of willows at the end of the path—"

Jin Rui put down the magazine in her hand and said with a smile, "This little devil, even learned to drop literary references. So bookish, I'm impressed she can recite it, I don't understand it." She had also grown up abroad from a young age, and her Chinese was not as clear as her Western languages. Susu had been cramming Chinese classics for several months, so naturally knew such simple poetic lines. Her face immediately flushed red, and she said, "Big Sister, don't listen to Fourth Sister's nonsense."

Jin Rui said with a smile, "I don't know what they were thinking, arranging for Third Brother to go on a business trip during the honeymoon."

Susu became even more embarrassed, only saying, "Is Big Sister teasing me too?"

Jin Rui knew she was always shy, so she just smiled and stopped. Wei Yi pulled up a chair and sat down, saying, "The weather is so nice, let's go out and play."

Jin Rui asked Susu, "Will you go? Let's go to Mount Qiyu to see the cherry blossoms."

Susu shook her head, "I won't go, I still have a French class in the afternoon."

Wei Yi said, "Haste makes waste, I think you're taking it too seriously."

Susu said, "Last time when I accompanied mother to see the ambassador's wife, I almost embarrassed myself, and I still feel very ashamed thinking about it."

Wei Yi, like twisted sugar, clung to Susu's arm, "Third Sister-in-law, let's go together. It's more fun with more people. If you want to learn French, Big Sister and I will teach you. At most, from today on, when the three of us are together, we'll only speak French, and guarantee you'll learn quickly."

Jin Rui also smiled, "Going out for a walk, and staying at home all the time is quite boring."

Because of her young age, everyone in the family doted on Wei Yi, and she even dared to act spoiled in front of Mu Rong Feng. Susu knew she couldn't resist her, and since Jin Rui as the eldest sister had spoken, she went along with them.

During the cherry blossom season at Mount Qiyu, prohibition cards were set up at the park entrance at the foot of the mountain, announcing that cars were not allowed in. The three of them rode in Li Boze's car, and since the park recognized the license plate, they were naturally allowed through immediately. The car sped like lightning, driving up the mountain. Susu hadn't paid attention, and only after getting out of the car did she ask, "Isn't it true that every year during the flower season, cars are not allowed in here?"

Wei Yi was stunned for a moment and asked, "Is there such a rule? I've been here twice in earlier years and never heard of it."

Jin Rui smiled, "Other people's cars, of course, are not allowed in. Don't mention this in front of Father later, or the old man will punish us by making us copy the family rules again."

The three of them followed the stone-paved mountain path, winding along with attendants following at a distance, but already quite conspicuous. Susu was not used to walking on mountain paths in high heels, but fortunately, Jin Rui and Wei Yi also walked slowly. After walking for a while, they saw a pavilion ahead, and Wei Yi immediately shouted, "Let's rest a bit." The attendants had already brought up brocade cushions to spread out, and Jin Rui said with a smile, "We really are useless, clamoring to come out mountain climbing, but after walking just this little bit, we already need to rest."

Wei Yi sat down, saying, "I don't know why, but as soon as I come home, I become lazy. The winter before last, I was with classmates in Switzerland, skiing every day, and didn't feel tired even when my legs were stiff."

Susu was sweating, and the breeze blowing in her face refreshed her spirit. She saw cherry blossoms all around, falling like rain, scattering profusely, like a thin layer of crimson snow on the ground, a scene so beautiful it made her sigh involuntarily. Then she heard someone call her name: "Susu."

She turned her face and was both surprised and pleased, "Mu Lan."

Mu Lan also had a look of surprise and delight, saying, "So it really is you." Xu Chang Ning stepped forward behind her, smiling in greeting: "Miss, Third Madam, Fourth Miss, the three of you are in good spirits today, coming out for a walk."

Jin Rui smiled at him, "Chang Ning, about the matter you promised me last time at Ruyi Tower, what about it?"

Chang Ning smiled, "When Miss gives an order, how dare I delay, it was taken care of early on." Since he didn't introduce Mu Lan, neither Jin Rui nor Wei Yi asked. But Susu said, "Big Sister, Fourth Sister, this is my friend Fang Mu Lan."

Jin Rui and Wei Yi both nodded with a smile to Mu Lan. Mu Lan said to Susu, "I saw the photos of your wedding in the newspaper, it was truly beautiful."

Susu didn't know how to respond, so she smiled and asked, "What about you? When will you and Mr. Xu invite us to your wedding banquet?" As soon as the words left her mouth, she saw Mu Lan look toward Xu Chang Ning, but Chang Ning coughed and asked, "Did the Third Young Master leave yesterday?"

Susu deeply regretted her hastiness and quickly answered, "He left yesterday, and by now he has probably arrived." Just then, Wei Yi beside her said she was hungry, and the attendants opened the food basket. Susu hadn't expected such thoroughness. All the food was exquisite Western pastries, and the coffee from the thermos was still steaming hot. After the five of them had coffee, they walked down the mountain. Mu Lan saw that Jin Rui and Wei Yi were walking ahead, so she said softly to Susu, "You've lost weight."

Susu said, "Really? I haven't noticed myself."

But Mu Lan said, "Just becoming the wife of the Third Young Master has made you even more radiant, I almost didn't recognize you just now."

Susu smiled, "You're just teasing me."

Mu Lan noticed a string of pearls wrapped around her wrist, twisted into an elegant three-strand bracelet. The pearls, though not large, were perfectly round, and most precious was that each one was uniform in size with a soft luster, emitting a gentle pearl light in the sunshine. She couldn't help saying, "Your pearls are beautiful, they must be southern pearls."

Susu looked down at them and said, "I don't know if they're Southern pearls, but I wear them daily because Mother gave them to me."

Mu Lan said, "Since they were given by the Madam, they must be extremely good, definitely southern pearls without a doubt."

By now it was nearly noon, and there were fewer visitors. Mu Lan looked back at the attendants following at a distance, and suddenly said, "Mr. Zhang invited everyone to dinner again last time."

Susu made a sound of acknowledgment and asked, "Is the dance troupe rehearsing a new play? Is everyone doing well?"

Mu Lan smiled, "Everyone talked about you at the dinner, all very envious." She also asked, "The Mu Rong family held a Western-style wedding, such a big event, and yet didn't host a big banquet for relatives and friends?"

Susu said, "It was father's idea, and mother agreed. A Western wedding is simple, when the father and mother get married, they also have a Western-style wedding. The elder's intention was not to be extravagant, but somehow it still got published in the newspapers."

Mu Lan smiled, "Such a big event, of course, the newspapers would make a big deal of it." The two talked to the side of the mountain path. Jin Rui and Wei Yi were already waiting by the car, and Susu felt very embarrassed, quickly walking over, "I was too busy chatting, walking so slowly."

Jin Rui said, "We just arrived too." The attendant had already opened the car door, and Jin Rui got in first, nodding to Chang Ning from a distance, "Come to the house for tea when you have time." Since she was in the car, Wei Yi would get in next, so Susu hurriedly said goodbye to Mu Lan. The three got into the car, the attendants sat in the car behind, and the two cars sped down the mountain like lightning.

Upon returning home, Wei Yi complained her feet hurt, and as soon as she entered the small drawing room, she curled up on the sofa. Jin Rui teased her, "So young, and already so useless." A maid came over to Susu and said, "Third Madam, the Third Young Master has called several times."

Susu was startled and asked, "Did he say what it was about?"

The maid answered, "He didn't say what it was about, just said to have you call him as soon as you got back."

Susu asked, "What's his telephone number there?" The maid was stunned for a moment, shook her head, and said, "The Third Young Master didn't say."

Jin Rui laughed, "Why make it so complicated?" She picked up the phone and said to the operator, "Connect to Pumen, find the Third Young Master." Then she handed the receiver to Susu, "See, you don't need to know the number." The operator indeed immediately connected to Pumen, and when the operator there heard it was a call from Shuangqiao Residence, they immediately connected to Mu Rong Qing Yi's line.

Hearing him ask, "Susu?" she quickly answered, "It's me. You called several times, is there anything urgent?"

He said, "Nothing urgent, just arrived and wanted to let you know."

Susu asked, "Was the journey all right?"

He said, "It was fine. They said you went out with Big Sister and Fourth Sister, where did you go?"

She answered, "We went to see the cherry blossoms."

He then said, "You should go out and play often, staying cooped up at home isn't good for your health either. You said you had a headache yesterday, did you call a doctor to check?"

Susu said softly, "I just caught a cold, today I'm already better."

From the sofa, Jin Rui was already laughing, "I can't stand these two anymore, all this fuss just to exchange a few idle words. You two talk at your leisure, Wei Yi, let's go." Wei Yi winked at Susu and said with mock seriousness, "Third Sister-in-law, don't say anything too intimate, both operators can hear everything."

Hearing them tease, Susu was too embarrassed, so she said to Mu Rong Qing Yi, "Nothing else? Then I'll hang up."

Mu Rong Qing Yi understood her meaning, so he said, "I'll call you again tonight."

Susu hung up the phone and turned around to see that Jin Rui and her sister had already left. So she asked the maid, "Has Madam returned?"

The maid said, "Yes, she's in the flower room."

Susu quickly said, "I'll go see mother." Walking to the flower room, Madam Mu Rong was entertaining female guests, and from a distance, one could hear the laughter and chatter. She walked in and called out, "Mother."

Madam Mu Rong nodded with a smile, asking, "I heard you all went to see the cherry blossoms. That's how it should be, young people should be lively."

Susu responded, "Yes."

Madam Guo interjected from the side, "Madam cares for her so much, truly treating her like her own daughter."

Madam Mu Rong held Susu's hand, smiling, "This child is most endearing, and obedient, compared to my third son, she's countless times better."

Madam Kang laughed, "Madam also loves everything associated with her loved ones."

Madam Mu Rong said, "I'm not just saying courteous words in front of others, my third son really can't compare to how Susu puts my mind at ease." Just then, Jin Rui walked in, smiling, "Mother, this is what's called treasuring what's your own, all your children and daughters-in-law are good."

Madam Mu Rong said, "I am being partial, Madam Kang's several daughters-in-law are also outstanding."

Madam Kang laughed, "The few of them, compared to the Third Madam, are like heaven and earth, crow and phoenix, how can they be mentioned in the same breath?" Jin Rui knew that because of the matter with Min Xian, Madam Kang had some heartache, so she said to Susu, "The French teacher has arrived and is waiting for you."

Hearing her say this, Susu said to Madam Mu Rong, "Mother, I'll go first then." Seeing Madam Mu Rong nod, she said to the guests, "Ladies, please make yourselves comfortable." This made all the female guests slightly bow in acknowledgment, saying, "Third Madam, please go ahead."

After having afternoon tea, the guests departed one by one. Jin Rui sat with Madam Mu Rong in the flower room, talking. Jin Rui said, "That Madam Kang is annoying, her words full of hidden barbs."

Madam Mu Rong said, "After all, the third one has hurt their pride." She added, "You always say I'm partial, but I see you are partial too. People always say mothers-in-law and sisters-in-law are the most difficult, but that's because they haven't seen you and Wei Yi. I know your sisters don't usually like to meddle in affairs, yet you defend Susu like this."

Jin Rui said, "Susu is indeed sensible and obedient, I never expected someone of her background to have not a trace of arrogance. The third one has chosen the right person—I'm mostly concerned for the third one, he's so infatuated with Susu, infatuated to the point of worry."

Madam Mu Rong said, "I see the third one has put all his heart into it." She sighed softly, "But like you, I feel somewhat worried, afraid that his excessive infatuation might not be well-received. As they say, 'deep emotions don't lead to longevity, extreme strength leads to humiliation.'"

Jin Rui laughed, "It's my fault for making you talk like this. The third one has changed his ways, being single-minded isn't good?" After a pause, she added, "The third one is a bit impulsive, but there's plenty of time ahead, with Susu's gentle nature, things shouldn't get out of hand."

Madam Mu Rong said, "I think Susu is too quiet, never willing to speak up when she's wronged. This is a strength, but I'm afraid it's also a weakness. The third one has a temper like exploding coal, never listening to what others say, let alone that she can't even express herself. I fear that if something happens in the future, the two might become deadlocked beyond remedy."

Jin Rui laughed, "Parents' hearts are indeed full of worry. Even in peaceful times, Mother sits here worrying needlessly."

Madam Mu Rong couldn't help but laugh, saying, "I should be worrying needlessly."

14

Mu Rong Qing Yi had only been gone for four days, but on his way home, his heart was already racing like an arrow. As soon as he stepped out of the car, he asked, "Is Madam at home?"

The attendant who opened the door for him beamed with joy, saying, "Madam has gone to Fenggang, and the Third Madam is in the small study."

Mu Rong Qing Yi's thoughts were revealed in a single sentence, and he couldn't help smiling, "How talkative, did I ask about her?"

The attendant saw the smile in his eyes, knew he was in a good mood, and said, "You didn't ask, Third Young Master, but the Third Madam has asked several times why she hasn't seen you return yet."

Mu Rong Qing Yi knew well that Susu would never ask like that, but the joy still overflowed from his heart. He quickly walked upstairs and saw Susu sitting there reciting vocabulary, her eyes gazing out the window. So he tiptoed up and embraced her shoulders from behind. Her body trembled, and as she turned to see it was him, she let out a soft cry of "Oh!" and said, "How did I not see your car coming in?"

He said, "I was afraid father would be home, so I got out of the car at the front." Then he examined her carefully. She felt embarrassed under his gaze and lowered her head, asking, "You've only been gone a few days, don't you recognize me anymore?"

He made a sound of acknowledgment and said, "Just a few days, but it feels like several months. How does that line from the Book of Songs go?"

Susu had been cramming Chinese classics, and when asked, she instinctively replied, "One day without seeing you feels like three autumns apart." Seeing his beaming smile, she realized she had fallen for his trick, and her face reddened as she said, "You start teasing me as soon as you get home."

He just smiled, "How can this be called teasing? You said it yourself." He then asked her, "When I called this morning, they said you had gone out. Was it with Wei Yi to go shopping?"

Susu said, "No, Mu Lan invited me for tea." Upon hearing this, Mu Rong Qing Yi said, "You should stop associating with that Mu Lan, to avoid future awkwardness."

Susu was shocked and asked, "What happened?"

Mu Rong Qing Yi said, "Chang Ning is going to get engaged to Hou Shan Yun. I think if you continue to associate with Mu Lan, others might start gossiping."

Susu was stunned for a long time before saying, "How can this be? The last time I saw Mu Lan and Chang Ning, they were still very close."

Mu Rong Qing Yi said, "Chang Ning isn't a fool. Hou Shan Yun is his equal in status, and the Hou family is currently in power. Both families are happy with the match."

Susu was both surprised and somewhat sad, asking in bewilderment, "Then what will happen to Mu Lan?"

Mu Rong Qing Yi said, "Don't worry about her. I've had someone prepare bath water, let's go take a bath."

The last sentence made her face flush red, and she became flustered, pushing him out the door.

The weather gradually grew warmer. In the afternoon, when the wind passed, one could hear the distant rumble of pine waves from countless ravines, like muffled thunder. Ancient trees surrounded the mansion on all four sides, casting dense shadows on the ground. Beneath the leaves, new cicadas chirped until their voices were hoarse. The cool breeze from the north corridor was most pleasant. On this long summer day, with drowsiness setting in, Susu was reading a magazine, and as she read, her hand gradually dropped, almost falling asleep, when she heard footsteps. Turning to look, it was Wei Yi, wearing tennis clothes with a racket in hand, who smiled and said, "Third Sister-in-law, I've arranged to play tennis with friends. Come along and have fun."

Susu smiled, "I don't know how to play this, you go ahead."

Wei Yi said, "The house is so quiet, it's quite dull. Let's go together."

Susu said, "I've arranged to meet a friend for afternoon tea." Only then did Wei Yi say, "Oh, it's rare to see Third Sister-in-law's friends visit."

Susu said, "We're meeting at a cafรฉ outside." Wei Yi stuck out her tongue and said, "Then I'll go first."

Since they were meeting at a cafรฉ, Susu changed into Western clothes before going out. As soon as she entered, Mu Lan teased her, "Haven't seen you for a few days, and your aura has become even more noble. Look at this outfit, like a young lady just returned from abroad."

Susu just smiled, saying, "That's just how their family rules are." The waiter came over, smiling and saying, "Third Madam is a rare guest. Today we have excellent cherry ice cream, would you like some?" And to Mu Lan he said, "Miss Fang's favorite coconut cake has just come out of the oven."

Mu Lan exclaimed "Aiya!" and said to Susu, "Look at this, the cafรฉ is becoming like an old Chinese restaurant."

This made the waiter quite embarrassed, and he quickly said, "Yes, yes, I spoke out of turn."

Susu, unwilling to see someone embarrassed, quickly said, "We'll have both the ice cream and cake you mentioned, you may go." Turning back, she heard Mu Lan ask, "Is the Third Young Master not at home?"

Susu's face showed a slight disappointment as she said, "He's always very busy."

Mu Lan gave a light laugh and said, "He's a man of great affairs, being busy is normal."

Just then, the cake and ice cream were served, and Mu Lan said, "The cakes here are getting worse and worse, even the presentation is poor."

Susu tasted a spoonful of ice cream and said, "I ordered this last time I came, it's nice of them to remember."

Mu Lan said, "It's fine if others don't remember, but if they can't even remember what the Third Madam likes to eat, they might not be far from closing down."

Susu could only smile and say, "They remembered your favorite cake too."

Mu Lan said, "Old customers, old courtesies, that's all." As they were talking, Susu looked up and saw someone entering the door, and her face changed slightly. Mu Lan was very perceptive and immediately noticed, so she turned to look. It was Xu Chang Ning. He wasn't alone but had a female companion. Susu recognized her as the fifth Miss Hou. Her heart raced with anxiety, but she could think of no solution. The weather was already hot, and now she felt the electric fan's breeze sticking to her clothes. She was both anxious and upset but saw that Mu Lan showed no expression at all. Having no quick wit herself, she became even more flustered. Xu Chang Ning had also spotted the two of them and slowed his steps, but Hou Shan Yun had also seen them and walked over to Susu with a smile, "Third Madam, what a coincidence today."

Susu could only nod, smiling and asking, "Is Miss Hou also here for coffee?"

Fortunately, Hou Shan Yun didn't know Mu Lan and was only talking to Susu: "Last time when Chang Ning and I got engaged, we had Yue Opera at home, and I noticed the Third Madam seemed to enjoy it very much. The day after tomorrow, the famous Yue Opera performer Shen Yu Lan will be coming to our home. I wonder if the Third Madam would honor us with her presence for a casual meal at our home."

Hearing her speak so politely, Susu could only say, "I'm an amateur when it comes to Yue Opera, just enjoying the atmosphere."

Hou Shan Yun smiled broadly, "The Third Madam is too modest. Everyone says that when it comes to art, only the Third Madam is the expert." She added, "The weather is hot, but our house is an old building, quite cool. Today when I go back, I'll send you a formal invitation."

Susu had no choice but to agree. Hou Shan Yun turned to Xu Chang Ning and said, "Remember to remind me later. I've been so careless, it's already very impolite of me." Only then did Xu Chang Ning ask, "Has the Third Young Master been busy lately? Haven't seen him around."

Susu said, "Yes, he has had a lot of official business recently." She finally glanced quietly at Mu Lan, who was eating her cake one bite at a time, seemingly unaffected. Hou Shan Yun was particularly courteous and talked for a long time before walking away with Xu Chang Ning. As soon as they left, Susu said, "Let's go, it feels stifling sitting here."

Mu Lan tossed her small silver spoon onto the saucer with a light "clang." Susu paid the bill, and the two walked out. Mu Lan remained silent, not speaking even after getting into the car. Susu was worried about her and told the driver, "Go to Wu Chi Lake Park."

The car drove to Wu Chi Lake, and once at the park, Susu accompanied Mu Lan along the corridor by the lake, walking slowly. The weather was very hot, and after just a moment, both were sweating profusely. The lotus flowers in the lake were just beginning to bloom, with tall emerald leaves setting off a few pure white lotuses like fairies skimming over waves. The wind carried the fresh scent of water, and a dragonfly with bulging eyes silently flew past them, its wings flashing silver in the sunlight before flying back.

Afraid that Mu Lan was upset, Susu tried hard to find topics of conversation. After thinking for a moment, she asked, "Is the dance troupe rehearsing a new play?"

Mu Lan sighed deeply and said, "I don't know, I haven't been there for a month."

Susu was puzzled, and suddenly Mu Lan stopped walking. Startled, Susu also halted and saw tears slowly falling down Mu Lan's face. Susu had never seen her cry before and didn't know what to do. Mu Lan's crying was just a slight sobbing sound as if she was suppressing her tears with great effort, which made Susu feel even worse. She could only softly call, "Mu Lan."

Mu Lan's voice choked as she said, "What should I do? What should I do…"

Susu already had no idea what to suggest, and hearing her question like this, she remained silent. Outside the gallery was a stretch of blue waves, lotus leaves spreading wide. Occasionally the wind would turn over the green canopy, revealing the bluish-green water surface. The breeze from the water was still hot against their skin, and cicadas began to chirp around them.

When she returned home, she still felt unwell. Since Madam Mu Rong had gone to the Fenggang Residence for the summer, the house was very quiet. As usual, Wei Yi went out and didn't return for dinner, leaving her to dine alone. The kitchen was very attentive, and besides the usual dishes, there was a special bamboo shoot and ham soup that she liked. But with her mind preoccupied and the hot weather, she only ate half a bowl of rice and tasted a few spoonfuls of soup. Back in the study upstairs, she found a book to read. The sky had already darkened, but she didn't bother to turn on the lights, tossing the book aside and walking to the window.

The street lamps in the courtyard had lit up, attracting countless small insects flying around them in circles, black dots spinning loops. There was hardly anyone moving in the yard, and the large house made it seem even more quiet. Her chest felt stuffed as if a stone was pressing on it. After walking around the room a couple of times, she had to sit down. On the low table, sandalwood incense was burning, a small red glimmer. The air seemed stagnant, like a still pond. The faint scent of sandalwood was like a fish gliding past one's sleeve.

She turned on the light and read for a while, but still felt uncomfortable, with her stomach churning like turbulent waves. She had to go downstairs. By chance, she met the servant Yun Jie, and apologetically said to her, "Yun Jie, could you trouble you to check if the kitchen has prepared any late-night snacks? My stomach feels quite uncomfortable."

Because she was always polite to the servants and rarely asked the kitchen for anything, Yun Jie immediately agreed and went. After a moment, she returned with a small bowl on a lacquer tray, saying, "It's rose rice balls. I remember the Third Madam likes these, so I had them make some."

Susu felt somewhat like she was losing her appetite, and seeing this, she didn't want to eat, but not wanting to disappoint Yun Jie's kindness, she ate two rice balls, which made her stomach feel worse. She had to stop eating. Just as she walked back upstairs, a wave of nausea hit her, and she rushed to the bathroom, where she vomited everything out, finally feeling slightly better.

Half-asleep in the middle of the night, she heard someone moving quietly, with the light turned very low. She quickly sat up and asked, "You're back, why didn't you wake me?"

Mu Rong Qing Yi didn't want to disturb her and said, "Go back to sleep, don't get up." He also asked, "Are you feeling unwell? Your face looks a bit yellow."

Susu said, "It's probably just the light making my face look yellow—why are you so late?"

Mu Rong Qing Yi said, "I wanted to get home earlier, so I hurried back overnight. This way, I can have a whole day free tomorrow to keep you company." The bedside light was very dim, and Susu felt uncomfortable under his gaze, slowly lowering her head again, but he wouldn't allow it, raising her face with his hand. His tender kiss was like a spring breeze, opening a hundred flowers in bloom.

Susu's face had a slight sheen of sweat. She was extremely tired, and drowsy with sleep, but felt a slight tickle on her neck. Susu had always been ticklish and couldn't help but smile as she put her hand against his face, "Stop teasing."

He made a sound of acknowledgment, and she gently pressed her finger against the blue stubble on his jaw. He asked, "I can't always be with you. Are you lonely by yourself at home?"

She said, "Mother, Big Sister, and Fourth Sister all treat me very well, how could I be lonely?"

He paused for a moment, then asked, "They treat you well—don't I treat you well?"

She was shy by nature and turned her face away. In front of the bed was a sandalwood embroidery screen with a large begonia embroidered on it. Luxuriant flowers clustered and meandered across six panels. She said, "You treat me very well." But involuntarily, she let out a soft sigh.

He asked, "Then why aren't you happy?"

She said softly, "I was just thinking about that child if only we could find him…"

Mu Rong Qing Yi was already worried about his heart, and hearing her say this, his expression changed slightly. He stroked her head and said, "I've already told people to continue searching. Don't keep it on your mind."

Seeing the change in his expression, Susu just said, "How can I not keep it on my mind?" Tears were already glistening in her eyes. He sighed deeply and pulled her into his embrace.

It was rare for him to have such a rest day, so the next day he slept until the sun was high before getting up. Since he got up so late, he decided to skip breakfast. Walking to the study, he saw Susu sitting there with a book open in front of her, but her eyes were looking elsewhere as if she had something on her mind. He said, "When did you get up? I didn't even know."

Susu was lost in thought, and hearing him speak startled her. He was puzzled, and since she hadn't heard him clearly, she just smiled and asked, "You're up?"

He made a sound of acknowledgment and said, "It's still most comfortable at home." Seeing some writing on a piece of paper beside her hand, he asked, "Practicing writing? Let me see." Without waiting for her to answer, he had already pulled it out to look. It contained scattered lines of poetry: "The Han is wide, too wide to swim across; the Yangtze is long, too long to bridge." Another line was: "Only now do I see how wrong I was then, my thoughts in confusion, red tears falling secretly, all that spring breeze now nothing but emptiness." Though he had received a Western education, he had been steeped in family learning from childhood and was very well-versed in Chinese classics. He immediately recognized the origins and sources of these two poems, and suspicion arose in his heart, though his face revealed nothing.

Susu had written these lines moved by her feelings, sighing for Mu Lan's sake, and seeing him pick them up to read, she felt somewhat guilty. Then she heard him ask, "You said you went out for afternoon tea with a friend yesterday, who was it?" Because he had previously told her not to associate much with Mu Lan, she was afraid he would be displeased if she told the truth, so after a moment's hesitation, she said, "It was with an old classmate, someone you don't know."

This was the first time she had lied to him, and she couldn't even lift her eyes to look at him, feeling her ears burning hot, afraid that her face was so red it might catch fire. He made a sound of acknowledgment, and just then a phone call came for him. He walked away to answer it, and she finally breathed a sigh of relief.

After taking the call, he had to go out again. Susu could see from his demeanor that his mood wasn't very good. But as always, she couldn't inquire about his official business, so she just saw him off, watching him get into the car before going back inside.

This time he went out, he had dinner at Ruyi Tower. The gathering included young men from prominent families, mixed with several movie stars, naturally very lively. As soon as he entered, Hou Zong Qi was the first to laugh, "The Third Young Master is here, over here, over here." He arranged for him to sit beside the movie star Yuan Cheng Yu. Yuan Cheng Yu was an old acquaintance and smiled, "Third Young Master, it's been so long since we've met."

Mu Rong Qing Yi smiled, "I haven't been to see Miss Yuan's new film, I deserve punishment."

Hou Zong Qi seized upon this remark and wouldn't let it go lightly, saying, "A punishment of drinking wouldn't count, it's too ordinary. And your alcohol tolerance is so good today let's make the punishment a bit more interesting." Everyone at the table cheered loudly, and Xu Chang Ning asked, "How interesting? Everyone needs to think carefully."

Hou Zong Qi said, "Let's punish the Third Young Master to receive a kiss from Miss Yuan." Yuan Cheng Yu was already laughing so hard she was bent over, and now she cried out, "That won't do, that won't do."

Xu Chang Ning also said, "Exactly, it's meant to be a punishment for the Third Young Master, how can we let him benefit instead?"

Hou Zong Qi laughed, "On the surface, it seems like he's getting a benefit, but there's one thing: he's not allowed to wipe off the red lipstick mark—everyone, think about it, when he goes home tonight, how will he explain it to his wife?"

Everyone indeed clapped their hands and laughed, repeatedly calling it clever. He Zhong Ze, always one to stir up trouble, added, "The kiss should be on his collar, where it can't easily be wiped off." Yuan Cheng Yu was unwilling to go along with this, and Mu Rong Qing Yi also laughed, "Don't go too far." But the crowd, with seven or eight hands, two or three people rushed forward and held Mu Rong Qing Yi down, while Hou Zong Qi pushed and pulled Yuan Cheng Yu over. They were used to such mischief, and seeing a bright red mark indeed stamped on Mu Rong Qing Yi's collar, they finally let go, laughing heartily.

Mu Rong Qing Yi had an excellent capacity for alcohol, but tonight he drank heavily, and by the time the banquet dispersed, his heart was pounding. Hou Zong Qi arranged cars to send guests home and winked at him mischievously, saying, "Third Young Master, I'm entrusting Miss Yuan to you."

Yuan Cheng Yu cast her eyes up and said, "Mr. Hou, you really won't let us off today?"

Hou Zong Qi made a sound of surprise and laughed, "Us? How dare I not let you off?" Although Mu Rong Qing Yi was drunk, he knew that if he gave Hou Zong Qi a weakness to exploit, there would be endless teasing. The only way was to be straightforward, and then Hou Zong Qi would let it go. So he said to Yuan Cheng Yu, "Don't mind him, let's go first." Indeed, seeing him speak this way, Hou Zong Qi thought they were turning a joke into reality, and smiled as he watched them get into the car.

Mu Rong Qing Yi had the driver take Yuan Cheng Yu home first, and just as he was about to head home, Lei Shao Gong, who was extremely attentive to details, reminded him: "Sir is at home today, and it's so late now." With alcohol surging up, he thought for a moment before understanding, "If Father sees me drunk like this in the middle of the night, with the fleet business still not taken care of, he'll surely be angry—let's go to Duanshan, and return after father sets out tomorrow."

Since Susu disliked electric fans, she lay there with a hand fan, waving it occasionally. The air was as stifling as an opened jar of glue—initially like water, then gradually solidifying, making each breath somewhat laborious. She was drifting off to sleep when she suddenly awoke with a start. A flash of light appeared outside the window, a bolt of lightning tore through the night sky, and a gust of wind blew in. Somewhere downstairs, an improperly closed window was flapping noisily. The wind carried a hint of coolness, suggesting rain was coming.

In the distance, a dull roll of thunder rumbled. Shortly after, another arc of lightning brightened the vast room. The heavy curtains and drapes were stirred by the wind, floating as if in flight. Then the sound of rain began, dense and urgent. She heard the rain falling heavily, the sound as if right by her ears, and in her drowsiness, she fell back asleep.

Mu Rong Qing Yi returned in the early morning. It was still very early, and Susu had not yet risen. Seeing his hurried manner, she asked, "Are you going out again?"

He made a sound of acknowledgment and said, "I'm going to Wanshan, so I came back to change clothes." As he spoke, he was unbuttoning his shirt. Halfway through, it was as if he remembered something; his hand paused, and he glanced at Susu, but he still removed his clothes and went to take a bath.

Susu also got up quickly and, seeing the clothes he had carelessly thrown on the chaise lounge, picked them up one by one to give to someone to wash. When she turned over the white shirt, on the collar was a smear of red, precisely the fashionable "apricot red" from Paris this year. She stood there like a fool, clutching the clothes tightly, her palm sweating profusely. Her heart felt hollow as if drained of strength. Although the early morning was cool, sweat beaded on her forehead. Outside the window, among the trees, birds were singing in clear, melodious voices, one call after another, until her ears began to ring.

He had already come out, his hair half-dried after washing, the damp hair soft and appearing even blacker. He said, "I won't be having breakfast at home, and I probably won't be back until tomorrow." His gaze fixed on her eyes as if trying to see through her. Her heart was only filled with a bewildered sadness, the thin mist in her eyes desperately held back, but afraid he would notice, she just lowered her head, her voice barely audible, "Yes."

Hearing her usual calm tone, he seemed displeased, "What's wrong with you? You sound just like them. You're not an attendant, you should know your status. When speaking in front of others, don't be so awkward."

She could only respond with a soft acknowledgment. He said, "Looking at you like this, I expect you'll be at a loss for words when guests arrive."

Hearing his displeasure, she fell silent, only forcing a smile and saying, "With mother not at home, there are fewer guests."

He glanced at her and said, "I'm leaving, don't see me out."

She was already heartbroken but trying hard to endure it. Watching him walk out, she finally couldn't hold back anymore. Tears, icy and cold, fell to her lips, bitter as coptis. Unexpectedly, as he reached the door, he turned back, and she hurriedly lowered her head, but he had seen. He smiled, walked back, and asked, "What's wrong?"

She didn't answer, quickly raising her hand to wipe away the tear marks. He took her hand and said softly, "Silly! Yesterday's incident was just them playing a joke, forcibly putting lipstick on my collar. Do you believe me?"

She looked up at him. Though his eyes held a smile, they were clear and serene, like the autumn sea, so deep and peaceful that she couldn't help but sink into them. She calmly let out a gentle sigh. She—naturally should trust him, and she naturally did trust him.

Due to the heavy rain the previous night, the tree branches and leaves were lush green, verdant and almost dripping, and the air had also become fresh. Susu had ordered a new formal dress from the department store, and Wei Yi accompanied her to try it on. The store was very meticulous, with three or four attendants using pins to carefully adjust the ill-fitting parts, repeatedly marking them for alterations.

Wei Yi laughed, "Third Sister-in-law rarely wears Western formal dresses, but when one occasionally sees you in them, you look extremely good."

Susu said, "There's a ball at home, that's why I ordered this. Otherwise, everyday clothes are more convenient."

Wei Yi, with a young girl's temperament, naturally delighted in new clothes. The manager brought out many catalogs for her to see, and since Susu had never liked being attended to by store staff, she went to change clothes alone.

The dressing room walls were very thin boards, covered with lotus-colored cloud-patterned wallpaper, appearing like the faint glow of sunset, a very pretty color. Because the partitions were thin, she could hear rustling sounds from next door, probably someone changing clothes. She heard a soft, sweet laugh, "This dress is quite expensive. Tell me honestly, who's paying for it?"

Another female voice replied, "What do you mean, who's paying? Of course, I pay for my clothes."

Susu had no desire to eavesdrop on others' conversations, but the formal dress was not easy to take off. Having finally changed into a qipao, she was reaching to fasten the buttons under her arm when she heard the earlier soft female voice scolding, "You can fool others, but what can you hide from me? Tell me the truth. I heard that last night, you left with the Third Young Master—and you didn't return for the whole night. This dress is probably paid for by him, right?"

Susu's hand slipped, and the button fell from her fingertips. Her heart was in turmoil, her palms sweating, and the round flower buttons of the qipao were so small that she couldn't grasp them. The voices from next door continued faintly. She heard a gentle, "You little devil, who has such a long tongue that you've already heard about last night so quickly?" The laughter was light and sweet, but Susu's heart was filling with cold, her mouth as bitter as if holding coptis. The laughter faded into whispered, indistinct murmurs, no longer audible.

She felt her steps were unsteady as she walked out and saw Wei Yi, who exclaimed, "Oh!" and asked, "Third Sister-in-law, what's wrong with you? In just a short while, your face has turned so pale."

Susu said, "It's probably the heat." She watched as the two people emerged from the changing rooms and glanced over as if by chance. She saw the first one was tall and slender, with a beautiful face still carrying a faint smile, her appearance somewhat familiar. Seeing Susu looking, Wei Yi said, "That's Yuan Cheng Yu. Her recent films have been quite popular."

Susu just stared at her lips, gleaming with that captivating apricot-red color. Her heart felt as if it had been severely lashed, throbbing with pain. Yuan Cheng Yu, unaware, was laughing and talking with her companion, asking the store staff to bring another style of clothing to look at.

Susu said to Wei Yi, "Let's go." Seeing her poor complexion, Wei Yi was afraid she might have heatstroke and said, "It's so hot, let's go sit in the park and have some ice cream. The breeze from the water there is cooling."

Susu, in a daze, just made a sound of acknowledgment.

The Western restaurant in the park faced Wu Chi Lake, with a pleasant breeze blowing from the water. Wei Yi ordered ice cream, while Susu only asked for a cup of milk tea. Wei Yi said, "Everything at home is good, except it doesn't have this lake breeze, which is why Mother likes to go to Fenggang for the summer."

Susu, forcing her spirits up, said, "Actually, the house at home is surrounded by trees, which makes it quite serene."

After finishing their snacks, Wei Yi and Susu slowly walked along the gallery, with dense shade on one side and blue waves with lotus fragrance on the other. Susu's heart gradually calmed down. As they turned a corner of the gallery, they happened to meet a couple walking hand-in-hand, facing each other. Before she could react, the other party was startled. Only then did she recognize Zhuang Cheng Zhi. Zhuang Cheng Zhi had never expected to encounter her and instinctively released his companion's hand, hesitating as he greeted her, "Su… Third Madam, hello."

Susu harbored no resentment and simply said, "It's been a long time, Mr. Zhuang." Then she introduced him to Wei Yi, "This is my former colleague, Mr. Zhuang."

Wei Yi, raised with a Western education, was very gracious in her dealings, and out of respect for her sister-in-law, had always been very polite to her friends. After exchanging a few pleasantries, Susu and Wei Yi left the park to return home.

When Mu Rong Qing Yi returned from Wanshan, the family had already had dinner, so he instructed the servant, "Tell the kitchen to send the meal to my room." As he spoke, he went upstairs. Susu was gazing out the window lost in thought and didn't notice him enter. He walked up behind her quietly, about to embrace her, when he saw tear marks at the corners of her eyes, as if she had been crying, which startled him.

Susu, seeing him, appeared alarmed and quickly stood up. He asked, "What's wrong? Everything was fine."

Her heart was only filled with pain, but she tried to say calmly, "Nothing, it's just the heat, I'm feeling a bit of summer discomfort."

He saw her gaze was miserable and confused, and when she saw him looking, she just lowered her head, as if instinctively avoiding something. He asked, "What's wrong?"

She just forced a smile, "Nothing, really nothing."

After he finished eating, he went downstairs and happened to meet Wei Yi coming out of the small drawing room with a cat in her arms. So he asked, "Wei Yi, was your Third Sister-in-law at home all day today?"

Wei Yi said, "In the afternoon, she and I went to try on clothes together, then went to the park for a stroll."

Mu Rong Qing Yi asked, "Just the two of you went out, no other friends?"

Wei Yi said, "Just me and my Third Sister-in-law." Then she casually added, "We met one of Third Sister-in-law's former colleagues in the park, exchanged a few words, and then came home. We didn't go anywhere else."

Mu Rong Qing Yi asked, "Former colleague?"

Wei Yi, unaware of the underlying issue, said, "I think his surname is Zhuang. I heard Third Sister-in-law introduce him as a colleague from the dance troupe."

This statement made his heart tighten, an irrepressible wound. So that was it, he thought to himself, that was it.

She hadn't forgotten; upon meeting him, she became so upset. She truly hadn't forgotten. He had forcibly claimed her person, but in the end, couldn't win her heart. She wept behind people's backs, forced a smile, all for someone else.

Wei Yi had walked far away, and in the distance, only the "meow" of the cat in her arms could be heard, like a feather lightly brushing away the wildness in his heart. He paced back and forth in the corridor, filled with resentment—she remembered someone else, shed tears for someone else. What made him even more furious was his concern; he was so jealous… She gave her heart to someone else, and he was concerned and resentful about it.

The house was large, and after nightfall, it seemed even quieter. Susu listened to the antique clock ticking, like what books describe as a winter water clock—drop by drop, chilling one to the core. She wore soft satin shoes, walking silently, and had just reached the study door, which was half-closed, when she heard Mu Rong Qing Yi on the phone: "You go first, I'll be right there." His tone was extremely gentle.

She hurriedly stepped back and slowly returned to the bedroom. After a while, he indeed came in to change clothes. She didn't want to ask, but still held onto a last thread of hope, "It's so late, you're still going out?"

He said, "Official business." Then added, "You go to sleep first, I won't be coming back tonight."

She lowered her head. His casual words explained everything. Coming back or not, his heart was already gone, what difference did it make? She knew happiness would not belong to her; she didn't have such luck. Heaven had merely played a trick on her, letting her believe she once had it, and then, immediately took everything back. He had given her the greatest happiness, then easily destroyed it again. The betrayal of the body was just the beginning of the betrayal of the heart. To him, she was perhaps only a humble object, desired for her beauty, so he liked her, collected her, grew tired of her, and abandoned her. The days ahead would be endless darkness, darkness forever thirsting for light that never comes.

The fan was still lying on the bedside, its soft tassel draped over the pillow. The pillow was embroidered with a pair of lotus flowers, pink double blossoms, each petal tightly embracing the lotus heart, a beautiful symbol of a hundred years of good union. A hundred years is so long, truly an extravagant hope, a hope beyond reach. "How easily an old friend's heart changes"—it wasn't yet autumn, but the bright white fan had already faded into decline.

A beam of light flashed outside the window as she rested her head against the window frame, the cold iron flowers branding her forehead—it was his car turning to leave.

Hou Zong Qi hung up the phone and hurried to Duanshan. Lei Shao Gong was resting, and Cong Shao Xian was on duty. Hou Zong Qi saw him standing in the corridor and asked, "Have they all arrived?"

Cong Shao Xian nodded, and Hou Zong Qi went in to find Mu Rong Qing Yi sitting there with a Western jigsaw puzzle in front of him. He was just holding the pieces in his hand, then with a "swish" tossed them down, only to grab another handful. Sitting across from him were Li Ze Yan and Qin Liang Xi. Seeing him enter, Mu Rong Qing Yi stood up and said, "Let's go to the card room." They were old card partners, knowing each other well. After several rounds, Mu Rong Qing Yi had lost the most.

Li Ze Yan, who was on a lucky streak, smiled and said, "Third Young Master, it looks like you won't be able to turn this around today."

Mu Rong Qing Yi said, "It's only three o'clock, don't speak so definitively."

Hou Zong Qi laughed, "Successful in love, Third Young Master, don't expect to be successful in gambling too."

Mu Rong Qing Yi said, "You all never spare me with your words. What success have I had?"

Qin Liang Xi laughed and said, "Miss Yuan is quite beautiful."

Mu Rong Qing Yi said, "The more you explain, the worse it gets. I won't fall for your tricks."

But Hou Zong Qi said, "Today's situation is quite strange, though. Yesterday the two of you left together in the same car, but today, on such a beautiful evening, you're here playing cards with us. Could it be that Miss Yuan didn't please you last night? No wonder you seem a bit unhappy—so it's not because you lost money."

Hearing Hou Zong Qi's ambiguous talk, Mu Rong Qing Yi couldn't help but laugh, "Nonsense!" The other two, Li and Qin, could no longer contain themselves and burst into laughter.

That day, Wei Yi wondered aloud, "What has Third Brother been busy with lately? Before, he would find every chance to come home, but lately, we hardly see him."

Susu forced a smile and said, "He must be busy, I suppose."

Wei Yi said, "Third Sister-in-law, your complexion has been poor lately. Let's call a doctor to check on you."

Susu's face reddened slightly, and she said, "No need, it's just the heat, making it hard to eat."

Jin Rui came over and said, "Fourth Sister doesn't know yet, but you're going to be an aunt."

Wei Yi exclaimed "Aiya!" and laughed, "Such news, and you didn't even tell me." Susu kept her head lowered. Wei Yi said, "What about Third Brother? He must be extremely happy. Third Sister-in-law, what did he say?"

Susu said softly, "He's naturally happy." It was rare for him to come home for dinner, so she told him then. His initial reaction was indeed one of great joy. But seeing her lower her head, the smile on his face quickly vanished, and he asked her, "Why aren't you smiling? Aren't you happy?"

She could only force a smile and say, "Of course I'm happy." But even she could hear the dryness in her voice, the insincerity. His voice couldn't help but deepen, "I understand."

She didn't know what he understood, nor did she comprehend the meaning behind his words. He coldly turned his face away, and she looked at him with shock and urgency. The moment he showed displeasure, she instinctively wanted to retreat. She didn't understand what had gone wrong again. She had been trying so hard, striving to be a good wife to him, but in just a few months, these efforts had already completely failed. He had begun to tire of her, and this weariness filled her with despair and panic. She endured greatly, not questioning his whereabouts. He came home less and less, and even when he did, he had no cheerful words for her. She had nothing else—only him—and now he didn't want her anymore.

Mu Rong Qing Yi had not planned to return home, but after dinner, he received a phone call from Wei Yi: "Third Brother, no matter how busy you are, you must come home. Third Sister-in-law is unwell today and hasn't even eaten."

He thought he could remain indifferent, but his heart was still troubled. Avoiding her seemed like a way to forget, but once awakened, his thoughts were still filled with her delicate silhouette.

He arrived home after midnight, and Susu was already asleep. She rarely slept so deeply, not even waking when he entered the room. A dim night light was on in the bedroom, and her face was in the shadows, her brow furrowed even in her dreams. He stood there, gazing at her from a distance. Her unhappiness was all because of him. In truth, he had long known she was unwilling to marry him, but had no choice, remaining faithful through it all. So unconsciously, she would become lost in thought with a wistful expression. She didn't care about him, not one bit. He deliberately tested her by being cold, but never heard a single complaint from her—she didn't love him, so she truly didn't care about his coldness. The pain in his heart was almost numbing. He had never felt so powerless; she didn't want his love, so she didn't care about him as a person.

Even with a child, she showed only a faint worry. Her unhappiness, that expression drove him mad. Every night, thoughts like venomous snakes gnawed at his heart. She truly didn't love him. He loved her so much, but she didn't love him. He had lost everything, and could only instinctively cling to his self-respect. He thought he could easily ignore her, but once he returned home and saw her face, this self-deception was completely shattered.
